Kite Season
Mozambique’s coastline stretches for over 2,400 kilometers along the Indian Ocean. It’s a nation deeply rooted in African culture with a touch of Portuguese influence, evident in its language, cuisine, and architecture. Kite scene in Mozambique is only emerging, the country offers plenty of (yet-to-be-discovered) spots and downwinders.
While you can kitesurf year-round in Mozambique, the best season is between September and March. The typical wind comes from south-east and is locally known as “Kusi”. Indian Ocean is warm year-round so you don’t need the wetsuit to kitesurf in Mozambique.
Main kite spots are Vilanculos, located on the mainland coast, a renowned kitesurfing hub. Shallow-water sandbanks here are perfect for beginners and freestyle enthusiasts. The consistent winds and the backdrop of the Bazaruto Archipelago’s islands make this spot a kitesurfer’s paradise.
Tofo Beach on the southern coast, offers kitesurfers the chance to ride on endless stretches of sandy beaches while enjoying warm waters and reliable winds. This laid-back coastal village also provides opportunities for whale watching and diving with manta rays and whale sharks.
Near the South African border, Ponta do Ouro is known for its consistent winds and varied kiting conditions. The area includes flat water lagoons and access to ocean waves.
