Kite Season
Tunisia, nestled on the northern coast of Africa along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, offers kitesurfing enthusiasts a delightful combination of cultural richness and wind-powered adventures. With its ancient ruins, bustling markets, and golden beaches, Tunisia provides a captivating backdrop for kiteboarders seeking both excitement and exploration.
Tunisia is a country steeped in history, with influences from ancient civilizations such as the Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of Carthage, wander through the narrow streets of the medinas, and relax on the sun-kissed beaches along the Mediterranean coastline.
The best time for kitesurfing in Tunisia is during the spring and summer months, from April to September, when the reliable northerly winds known as the “Sirocco” blow along the coast. During this season, riders can expect wind speeds ranging from 12 to 30 knots, more likely up to 20 knots, creating ideal conditions for kiteboarding. The warm Mediterranean waters and sunny skies provide a pleasant environment for extended kite sessions.
Known as the “Island of Dreams,” Djerba is a popular kitesurfing destination with its sandy beaches and consistent winds. Spots like Souk El Ghebli lagoon offer excellent conditions for riders of all levels, with flat water and small waves to enjoy. There are good spots like Djerba Lagoon and Smile beach on the northern shore or the island.
North of Tunis, Kalaat lagoon is great in SE wind, and Ras el Jebal (Ras Jbel) in NW wind. Kalaat offers a great flat-water area. East of Tunis, Sidi Rais (close to Marisa) also works well in NW.
On the eastern coast, Monastir area offers kitesurfers a charming blend of history and adventure. The beaches of Hergla, Kantaoui (SE wind) & Sousse, and Edzira provide ample space for kiteboarding, with steady winds and stunning views of the Mediterranean.
Tunisia’s kitesurfing scene combines the thrill of wind-powered sports with the allure of Mediterranean beauty and North African charm. Whether you’re gliding across the waters of Djerba, exploring the northern coast, or soaking in the history of Monastir, Tunisia promises unforgettable kiteboarding experiences along its sun-drenched shores.
