Kite Season
Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, is a treasure trove of biodiversity and natural wonders, offering kitesurfers an untamed paradise for wind-powered adventures. Madagascar provides an exhilarating backdrop for kiteboarding enthusiasts seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences. Traveling in Madagascar takes time, so you’ll most likely pick one place for your kite vacation.
Madagascar is renowned for its unique flora and fauna, including lemurs, baobab trees, and colorful chameleons. The island’s rugged coastline, remote villages, and vibrant markets showcase the cultural richness of the Malagasy people, adding to the kitesurfing experience.
The best time for kitesurfing in Madagascar is during the austral summer, from May to October when the southeast trade winds blow consistently along the coast. During this season, riders can expect wind speeds ranging from 15 to 35 knots. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the relatively uncrowded beaches make Madagascar a hidden gem for kite riders.
On the northern tip, close to Antsiranana, Sakalava bay is emerging as an international kite location. It is a fairly remote area but with infrastructure tailored to kitesurfers. It also has a couple of kite schools and options to rent kite gear.
Situated on the southwest coast, Anakao is a remote fishing village known for its consistent winds and pristine beaches. The flat water conditions inside the lagoon make it ideal for beginners and freestyle riders, while the waves outside the reef offer challenges for more experienced kiteboarders.
Off the east coast, Ăle Sainte-Marie is a tropical paradise known for its turquoise lagoons and rich marine life. Kitesurfers can enjoy the calm waters of the lagoons or venture to the outer reefs for more challenging conditions.
On the west coast, Morondava is famous for its Avenue of the Baobabs and vibrant coastal culture. Kitesurfing spots like Andavadoaka and Belo-sur-Mer offer a mix of flat water and wave-riding opportunities, with picturesque surroundings and warm hospitality.
