Kitesurfing in Florida

If Florida had a middle name, it would probably be “Sunshine”—oh wait, it already does. With warm weather, turquoise water, and coastlines stretching along both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Florida is one of the world’s top kitesurfing destinations. And unlike many kite destinations, you can usually leave your thick wetsuit at home. Your sunscreen, however, is non-negotiable.

The best kitesurfing season runs from November to May, when regular cold fronts sweep across the state, bringing reliable winds of 15-30 knots. During the summer, lighter thermal breezes often provide enjoyable sessions, especially on the Atlantic coast. Thanks to Florida’s geography, there’s almost always somewhere with the right wind direction, making it one of the most dependable kite destinations in North America.

One of the state’s most famous kite spots is Crandon Park in Miami. With shallow turquoise water, steady side-onshore winds, and the Miami skyline as a backdrop, it’s easy to see why riders from around the world flock here. Just remember to admire the skyline between jumps—not during them.

Further north, Jupiter is a favourite among wave riders thanks to its consistent Atlantic swell and stronger winds. Cocoa Beach offers a great mix of flat-water areas and small waves, making it suitable for riders of all levels.

The Florida Keys provide a completely different experience. Islamorada and Key West are famous for their warm, crystal-clear flats that seem to stretch forever, creating ideal conditions for beginners, freestyle riders, and foil enthusiasts. On the Gulf Coast, Skyway Bridge near St. Petersburg and East Beach at Fort De Soto Park are local favourites, offering reliable wind and spacious riding areas.

Kitesurfing in Florida is about as close as it gets to endless summer. Warm water, consistent wind, spectacular sunsets, and the occasional curious dolphin make every session memorable. Just keep one eye on the wind forecast—and the other on the pelicans, because they always seem to think they’re part of the kite school too.
