The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago located off the northwest coast of Africa, beckon kitesurfing enthusiasts with their year-round sunshine, diverse landscapes, and 300+ windy days. Comprising seven main islands, each with its own unique charm, the Canary Islands offer a variety of kite spots to explore.

The Canary Islands enjoy favorable kitesurfing conditions throughout the year, thanks to the trade winds known as the “Alisios.” However, the best time to visit for kitesurfing is from late spring to early autumn, when the winds are strongest and most consistent. During this period, riders can expect wind speeds ranging from 15 to 40 knots. Pack small kites! ;)

Fuerteventura: Often hailed as the “European Hawaii,” Fuerteventura is a mecca for kitesurfers. Its long stretches of sandy beaches and reliable winds make it an ideal destination for riders of all levels. Sotavento Beach and Flag Beach are among the most popular spots, offering flat water and wave riding opportunities. El Cotillo (quite some rocks in low tide), Matas Bay (usually offshore wind) are anoter popular places.

Tenerife: As the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife offers diverse kitesurfing experiences. El Médano, located on the southeast coast, is renowned for its strong winds and championship-level conditions. Riders can enjoy a mix of flat water and waves against the backdrop of the island’s volcanic landscapes.

Lanzarote: Known for its otherworldly landscapes, Lanzarote provides a unique kitesurfing setting. Famara Beach, on the northwest coast, offers consistent winds and impressive waves, attracting both freestylers and wave riders.

Gran Canaria: With its bustling tourist resorts and diverse coastline, Gran Canaria offers varied kitesurfing opportunities. Playa de Vargas and Pozo Izquierdo are popular spots known for their strong winds and challenging conditions, making them favorites among advanced riders. Punta de Maspalomas and Las Burras are usually suitable during winter.

Small kite community of La Palma usually kite on the main beach of Santa Cruz de la Palma.
