Belgium packs plenty of wind into its 65-kilometer stretch of North Sea coastline. Better known for waffles, chocolate, beer, and comic books, Belgium is also a surprisingly popular destination for kitesurfers. The beaches are wide, the wind is reliable, and you’re never too far from a cozy beach café serving fries that somehow taste better after a three-hour session in cold water.

The best kitesurfing season runs from April to October, although many local riders are on the water year-round. Summer brings pleasant temperatures and steady sea breezes, while spring and autumn deliver stronger low-pressure systems with winds often ranging from 15 to 30 knots. The prevailing southwesterly winds provide consistent cross-onshore conditions, making Belgium a great place for freeriding, wave sessions, and improving your skills. Just don’t expect tropical water—your wetsuit will earn its keep.

The country’s most famous kite spot is Brouwersdam… just kidding—that’s in the Netherlands, and every Belgian has probably kited there at least once. Belgium’s own superstar is Knokke-Heist, located near the Dutch border. This wide sandy beach offers reliable wind, small waves, and plenty of space when the tide cooperates.

Further down the coast, Zeebrugge attracts riders looking for steady conditions and fewer crowds, while De Haan offers a beautiful natural setting with consistent North Sea winds. Oostende combines good kitesurfing with a lively seaside atmosphere, making it easy to grab a post-session Belgian beer or plate of moules-frites. Groenendijk is another local favorite, with wide beaches and excellent conditions for both beginners and experienced kiters, while Westende and Koksijde provide fun wave sessions when the wind and swell line up.

Kitesurfing in Belgium is all about making the most of whatever the North Sea throws your way. One minute you’re boosting jumps under blue skies, the next you’re wondering if that cloud is heading your way at 40 knots. Fortunately, there’s always a warm café nearby, excellent beer waiting after your session, and enough fries to replace every calorie you just burned. That’s what we call balanced training.
