Sweden is famous for IKEA, meatballs, and stunning nature—but it’s also one of Northern Europe’s best-kept kitesurfing secrets. With thousands of kilometers of coastline, countless lakes, and the Baltic Sea on one side and the Kattegat on the other, Sweden offers a huge variety of kite spots for every style of riding. Add clean beaches, crystal-clear water, and long summer days where the sun barely sets, and you’ll quickly understand why Swedish kiters don’t mind wearing a thicker wetsuit.

The best kitesurfing season runs from May to September, when warmer temperatures and reliable thermal breezes combine with regular weather systems to deliver excellent riding conditions. Winds typically range from 15 to 30 knots, with southwesterly and westerly winds being the most consistent along the west coast. Spring and autumn often bring even stronger winds, although you’ll want to pack gloves and boots unless your feet are secretly made of Viking steel.

One of Sweden’s most famous kite destinations is Habo Ljung, near Malmö. This long sandy beach offers reliable winds, shallow water close to shore, and excellent conditions for everyone from beginners to experienced riders. Nearby, Lomma Beach is another local favourite, with flat water inside the bay making it ideal for learning new tricks.

Further up the west coast, Varberg is widely regarded as Sweden’s kitesurfing capital. With several beaches nearby—including Apelviken and Kärradal—it offers consistent wind, fun waves, and a vibrant watersports community. If the forecast looks good, chances are half the country’s kiters will somehow end up there.

For flat-water lovers, Falsterbo delivers excellent lagoon-style conditions and beautiful white-sand beaches, while Öland and Gotland offer wide open coastlines with reliable Baltic winds and far fewer crowds.

Kitesurfing in Sweden is all about quality over quantity. The season may be shorter than in tropical destinations, but when the wind is blowing and the summer sun refuses to go down, you’ll happily stay on the water until your legs give up. Afterwards, you can celebrate with a cinnamon bun—because in Sweden, even your post-session snack is world-class.
