Kite Season
When you think of Germany, you might picture beer, sausages, and the Autobahnβbut itβs also a fantastic destination for kitesurfing! With its windswept coastlines, pristine beaches, and diverse conditions, Germanyβs North Sea and Baltic Sea offer some of Europeβs best kiting spots. And after a solid session, you can reward yourself with a bratwurst and a cold beerβwhatβs not to love?
The prime kite season in Germany runs from April to October. During these months, the wind is fairly consistent, especially along the North Sea and Baltic coasts, with wind speeds ranging between 15 and 25 knots. The North Sea coast tends to be windier and rougher, perfect for those who love riding waves, while the Baltic coast offers calmer waters and flatter conditionsβideal for beginners or those practicing their tricks. Just donβt forget your wetsuitβGerman waters are not exactly tropical!
St. Peter-Ording (North Sea) – The holy grail of German kitesurfing. With miles of sandy beach, consistent winds, and wide-open spaces, St. Peter-Ording is a kitesurfing mecca. Itβs great for everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros, and it even hosts world cup events. Plus, the beach is so vast you might even feel like you have your own personal stretch of sand.
Known as the βHawaii of the North,β Fehmarn offers steady winds, shallow water, and plenty of space for riders of all levels. Plus, the sunsets here are unreal. Who knew kitesurfing in Germany could feel so tropical?
Germanyβs largest island, RΓΌgen (Baltic sea), boasts several great kite spots, such as Suhrendorf and Dranske. Itβs perfect for those seeking flat water, steady winds, and fewer crowds. Just be prepared to get blown away by the islandβs natural beautyβand the wind, of course.
Sahlenburg (North Sea): A great spot for wave lovers! The tides here create an ever-changing playground for kiters, with challenging conditions that keep you on your toes. Thereβs a unique local charm, and youβll often find fellow kitesurfers enjoying a post-session snack on the dunes.
If youβre new to kiting or looking for flat-water conditions, Pelzerhaken (Baltic Sea) is a hidden gem. With waist-deep water and a chill vibe, itβs perfect for perfecting your skills and avoiding the crowds.
So, if youβre ready to ride the wind in a place that combines adrenaline with sausages, Germanyβs kitesurfing scene has got you covered. And after your session, you can trade your kite for a pint at a local beer gardenβprost!
