Kite Season
France isnât just about croissants, wine, and effortlessly cool fashionâitâs also a kitesurfing paradise with a coastline that serves up just about every condition you could dream of. From wild Atlantic waves to Mediterranean lagoons, France is a buffet of kite spots where you can get your adrenaline fix and your après-kite baguette all in one go.
The best time to kitesurf in France depends on the region. The Mediterranean coast is great from April to October, thanks to steady thermal winds and the infamous Mistral, which can send you flying (sometimes literally). The Atlantic coast, on the other hand, sees stronger winds from September to May, making it the go-to place for big wave lovers and those who enjoy wearing thick wetsuits year-round.
One of the top spots is Leucate-La Franqui in the south, home to the legendary Tramontane wind. Itâs fast, itâs furious, and itâll turn your session into a high-speed adventure whether you like it or not. Be ready to hold on tight!
Then thereâs Gruissan, where the water is flat and the wind is strongâso strong that it hosts one of the craziest speed kiting events in the world. If you ever wanted to feel like a human rocket, this is your place.
Over on the Atlantic side, thereâs Lacanau and Arcachon, offering wind for those who love a challenge. Further north, the beaches of Brittanyâlike La Torcheâoffer some of the best wave riding in Europe, with winds strong enough to make you reconsider your life choices mid-air.
Lac Hourtin, near Bordeaux, is a dreamy spot for beginners and freestyle lovers, offering butter-flat water and reliable summer thermals. La Palmyre, with its wide sandy beaches and steady winds, is a favorite on the Atlantic coast, perfect for long downwinders.
Sainte-Barbe, in Brittany, serves up a mix of flat water and waves, depending on the tide, making it a versatile playground for all levels. Pont-MahĂŠ, a lesser-known gem, is a shallow lagoon where you can ride for hours without worrying about chop.
And then thereâs Wissant, up in the north, where the North Sea delivers punchy winds and rolling wavesâideal for those who donât mind kiting in cooler conditions (or in full neoprene armor).
Whether you’re into flat water, waves, or just want an excuse to eat cheese after a session, France has a kite spot for you. Just rememberâalways finish with a cafĂŠ and a croissant. Itâs the French way.
