Kitesurfing in Finland

Known as the land of a thousand lakes—although, to be fair, it actually has closer to 188,000 of them. Add a long Baltic coastline, countless islands, pristine nature, and plenty of wind, and you’ve got a surprisingly good destination for kitesurfing. While Finland may not offer tropical beaches or palm trees, it makes up for it with peaceful launch spots, crystal-clear water, and the chance to kite under the midnight sun. That’s right—summer sessions can last as long as your legs do.

The best kitesurfing season runs from May to September, when temperatures are at their warmest and thermal breezes combine with passing weather systems to create reliable conditions. Winds generally range from 15 to 30 knots, with southwesterly and westerly winds providing the most consistent sessions along the coast. Spring and autumn often bring stronger winds for experienced riders, while winter opens up a whole new world of snowkiting on frozen lakes and fields. Because in Finland, even when the water freezes, people somehow find a way to keep kiting… or snow kiting.

One of the country’s best-known kite spots is Yyteri Beach near Pori. Its long sandy shoreline, shallow water, and consistent Baltic winds make it suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced riders. Nearby, the wide-open beaches provide plenty of space, even on windy weekends.

Closer to Helsinki, Kalajärvi and Lauttasaari are popular among local kiters looking for convenient sessions after work. Hanko, Finland’s southernmost town, is another favourite, offering reliable sea breezes and beautiful beaches during the summer months.

Further north, Kalajoki is one of Finland’s premier watersports destinations, with wide sandy beaches, excellent wind exposure, and a growing kitesurfing community.

Kitesurfing in Finland is all about embracing the outdoors. The beaches are uncrowded, the nature is breathtaking, and the summer days seem almost endless.
