August is peak summer in the Northern Hemisphere, which means warm water, long days, beach bars, and—most importantly—plenty of places where the wind is ready to play along. It’s also one of the busiest months for travel, so choosing the right destination can make the difference between an epic kite holiday and spending half your trip fighting for beach space.

From the powerful monsoon winds of Oman to the legendary Levante of Spain, August offers plenty of options for riders looking for reliable conditions. Whether you’re after flat-water lagoons, warm Caribbean water, or a lively beach town where the session continues long after the kite comes down, there’s a destination for you.

So, where should you go kitesurfing in August? Here are four spots worth putting on your wind forecast.

🇴🇲 Oman

Oman is where kitesurfing meets proper adventure. While much of the country is busy being spectacularly hot and desert-like, Masirah Island becomes a playground for wind lovers during the summer monsoon season. The Khareef and associated summer wind patterns can produce powerful conditions, with winds often reaching around 20–35 knots. This is definitely not the destination for someone hoping to spend their holiday gently cruising around on a giant kite.

Masirah’s beaches are wild, spacious and remarkably uncrowded. You may have to share the coastline with turtles, camels or the occasional fisherman, but fellow kiters? Not necessarily. The island’s remote character is a huge part of the appeal, making this one for riders who prefer adventure over beach clubs and poolside cocktails.

Air temperatures in August are hot, often around 30–35°C, while the water remains warm at roughly 27–29°C. You won’t need a wetsuit, although plenty of sunscreen is highly recommended. With winds frequently in the 20–35 knot range, smaller kites are likely to get much more use than your biggest light-wind weapon.

Oman is also one of the more adventurous destinations on this list. Accommodation and food can be reasonably priced once you’re there, with a mid-range budget of roughly €50–120 ($60-135) per person per day, although getting to Masirah and arranging transport can add to the overall cost.

This isn’t a polished resort holiday—and that’s exactly the point. Bring your gear, bring your sense of adventure, and don’t expect a Starbucks to appear when you start craving a post-session latte. Oman is about wind, wilderness and having an entire beach seemingly to yourself.

🇪🇸 Spain

If you’re looking for kitesurfing in August without leaving Europe, Spain is an obvious choice. And while Tarifa gets most of the glory, there are plenty of other destinations worth considering if you don’t fancy sharing the beach with half of Europe’s kite population.

Tarifa’s Valdevaqueros and Los Lances beaches are the headline acts. The famous Levante blows from the east and can deliver powerful, gusty conditions, while the Poniente from the west tends to be lighter and smoother. In August, wind speeds commonly range from around 15–30 knots depending on the wind direction and location. The Mediterranean and Atlantic waters provide different riding conditions, so you can often find something to suit your style.

Air temperatures are generally around 28–32°C, while water temperatures hover around 21–23°C. A shorty or summer wetsuit can be useful, especially for longer sessions.

If Tarifa sounds a little too busy, head to Isla Canela in Andalucía for a more relaxed atmosphere and broad sandy beaches. Sant Pere Pescador, on the Costa Brava, is another excellent August option, with the famous Tramontana helping to provide reliable wind. The Ebro Delta is also worth considering for riders looking for flatter water and different scenery from the classic Spanish beach resort.

Spain offers a wide range of budgets. You can travel relatively cheaply by staying in apartments or campsites, while Tarifa’s popular summer period can push accommodation prices significantly higher. Around €60–150 ($70-170) per person per day is a reasonable mid-range budget, excluding flights and kite equipment.

And then there is the food. Tapas after kiting isn’t just recommended—it’s practically a legal requirement. Just don’t tell yourself that five plates count as “sharing.”

🇹🇷 Turkey

Turkey is one of those destinations that seems almost unfairly good at holidays. Warm water, reliable summer wind, excellent food, beautiful coastlines and enough baklava to make your calorie counter quietly resign.

Akyaka, on the Gulf of Gökova, is the country’s best-known kitesurfing destination. During August, its famous thermal wind can regularly reach around 18–25 knots, usually building through the afternoon. The huge shallow bay creates relatively forgiving conditions, making Akyaka particularly attractive for beginners, freeriders and riders working on new tricks.

Alaçatı is another major kite destination, famous for its strong summer thermal winds and flat-water conditions. Experienced riders can also explore Gökçeada and Gömeç, which offer different scenery and conditions away from the busiest resorts.

August is hot, with daytime temperatures often around 30–35°C and water temperatures around 25–27°C. That means boardshorts, rash guards and an unreasonable amount of sunscreen are the usual wardrobe.

Turkey can also be excellent value compared with many Western European destinations. Depending on your accommodation and travel style, around €50–120 ($60-135) per person per day can cover a comfortable holiday, although prices in the most popular resort areas can be higher.

The biggest danger in Turkey isn’t the wind. It’s telling yourself you’ll have “just one quick dinner” after your session and then discovering three hours later that you’ve eaten kebabs, meze, baklava and enough Turkish bread to feed a small kite school.

🇩🇴 Dominican Republic

If your idea of August involves warm Caribbean water, palm trees and reliable trade winds, the Dominican Republic should be high on your list. Cabarete is the country’s undisputed kitesurfing capital, with a lively kite scene, warm water and conditions that can keep riders on the beach from morning until sunset.

Cabarete’s trade winds typically strengthen during the day, with August often offering around 15–25 knots. Mornings can be relatively mellow and are great for cruising or beginners, while the afternoon breeze usually picks up and provides more power for jumps, freestyle and wave riding.

The water is beautifully warm at around 28–29°C, while daytime temperatures typically sit around 30–32°C. A wetsuit is definitely not required—unless you have somehow brought one all the way to the Caribbean and are determined to prove it.

Cabarete is the main destination, but Las Terrenas, Punta Cana and La Boca offer alternatives for riders wanting to explore beyond the main kite hub. Each has its own atmosphere and conditions, although Cabarete remains the place to go if you want the biggest kite community and the easiest access to schools, rentals and beachside restaurants.

The Dominican Republic offers good value for a Caribbean destination. A mid-range traveller can expect to spend roughly €60–130 ($70-145) per person per day, depending on accommodation and how much time is spent in the more touristy areas. Kite lessons, equipment rental and excursions will add to that.

And then there’s the atmosphere. Cabarete has the kind of beach culture where “one last session” can easily become three, followed by drinks, dinner and someone convincing you that tomorrow’s forecast is going to be even better.

So, where should you go kitesurfing in August?

August gives you plenty of choices, but each of these destinations offers something different.

For serious wind and an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Oman is hard to beat. Masirah Island combines powerful summer winds with empty beaches and spectacular scenery—but it is best suited to experienced riders who are comfortable with remote conditions.

For a classic European kite holiday, Spain offers the most variety. Tarifa is the obvious choice for strong wind and a lively atmosphere, while Isla Canela, Sant Pere Pescador and the Ebro Delta provide alternatives if you want something a little different.

Turkey is arguably the all-rounder. Akyaka and Alaçatı combine warm water, reliable thermal winds, good infrastructure and excellent food, making them particularly attractive for beginners and intermediate riders.

And if you want a tropical escape, Cabarete delivers the full Caribbean package: warm water, trade winds, palm trees and a kite community that knows how to have fun after the session.

Just remember that August is peak holiday season in many places, so booking early can save you money—and save you from discovering that the only available accommodation is a room above a nightclub.
