Kite Season
Sri Lanka, known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” offers kitesurfing enthusiasts a tropical paradise with its pristine beaches, warm waters, and consistent winds. Rich in cultural heritage, lush landscapes, and diverse wildlife, Sri Lanka provides an enchanting backdrop for thrilling kiteboarding experiences.
Sri Lanka is a land of contrasts, from ancient temples and colonial architecture to lush tea plantations and wildlife-rich national parks. Visitors can explore the bustling markets of Colombo, surf the waves in Arugam Bay, or embark on a safari in Yala National Park, immersing themselves in the island’s rich tapestry of experiences.
Sri Lanka has two kite seasons. The best time for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka is during the summer months, from May to September when the southwest monsoon brings consistent winds to the western and southern coasts. During this season, riders can expect wind speeds ranging from 20 to 30 knots, providing optimal conditions for kiteboarding. The second season goes from December to mid-March.
Located on the northwest coast, Kalpitiya is one of Sri Lanka’s premier kitesurfing destinations. The expansive lagoon, bordered by sandbars and mangrove forests, offers flat water conditions ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. The strong winds and shallow waters make Kalpitiya a haven for kiteboarding enthusiasts.
Just north of Colombo, Negombo is another kite spot known for its wide sandy beaches and reliable winds. The lagoon provides flat water conditions, perfect for practicing tricks and improving skills. The bustling beach town offers a lively atmosphere and plenty of amenities.
While kitesurfing is possible on many beaches on the West side, Kalpitiya is definitely the biggest hub when it comes to kitesurfing. Further north, Mannar is another interesting destination, but it is a really remote area.
