Ecuador packs an incredible amount of adventure into a compact package. From the snow-capped Andes and the Amazon rainforest to the Pacific coastline and the famous Galápagos Islands, Ecuador is a paradise for outdoor lovers. And yes—it’s also home to some fantastic kitesurfing. With consistent winds, warm weather, and uncrowded beaches, Ecuador is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on every kiter’s bucket list.

The best kitesurfing season runs from June to December, when the Humboldt current helps create reliable thermal winds along the coast. During these months, riders can expect steady winds of 15–30 knots, with the strongest conditions typically arriving between July and October. Water temperatures stay pleasant year-round, so a shorty or even just boardshorts are often enough. In true Ecuadorian fashion, you can kite in the morning and be hiking a volcano the next day.

The country’s best-known kite destination is Santa Marianita, just south of Manta. This long sandy beach has become Ecuador’s kitesurfing capital thanks to its dependable cross-shore winds, rolling waves, and relaxed atmosphere.

There are other non-mainstream sports along the coast waiting to be explored and to kite away from the crowds.

Kitesurfing in Ecuador is all about variety. One day you’re carving through Pacific waves, the next you’re exploring colonial towns, tasting fresh ceviche, or standing on the equator with one foot in each hemisphere. Not a bad way to spend a kite trip—even if your friends back home insist Ecuador is “just where the bananas come from”.
