Kite Season
Uruguay, nestled between Argentina and Brazil on the southeastern coast of South America, is a hidden gem for kitesurfing, especially for those seeking uncrowded beaches, consistent winds, and a welcoming atmosphere. With its diverse coastline and reliable breezes, Uruguay offers an ideal setting for kitesurfing adventures.
Its pristine Atlantic coastline stretches for over 660 km (410 mi), and provides endless opportunities for kitesurfers to explore its varied kite spots.
The kitesurfing season in Uruguay generally spans from October to April, with the peak season between November and February. During these months, the weather is warm and the Atlantic coast enjoys consistent winds, primarily driven by the prevailing south-southeast winds known as the “Sudestada.”
Located on the eastern coast, La Paloma area is a popular kitesurfing destination known for its consistent winds and scenic beaches. Playa La Aguada, in particular, offers excellent conditions for both beginners and experienced riders. A little bit further north, Playa del Barco in La Pedrera is also popular.
Punta del Este, known as Uruguay’s premier beach resort town, offers a mix of luxury and kitesurfing. Playa Brava and Playa Mansa are two main beaches where you can catch the wind and ride the waves.
Laguna Garzón is a shallow lagoon near the town of José Ignacio. What makes this spot particularly interesting for kiteboarding is its shallow, flat water conditions, which are ideal for freestyle riding & learning.
