Kite Season
When you think of Germany, you might picture beer, sausages, and the Autobahn—but it’s also a fantastic destination for kitesurfing! With its windswept coastlines, pristine beaches, and diverse conditions, Germany’s North Sea and Baltic Sea offer some of Europe’s best kiting spots. And after a solid session, you can reward yourself with a bratwurst and a cold beer—what’s not to love?
The best kite season in Germany runs from April to October. During these months, the wind is fairly consistent, especially along the North Sea and Baltic coasts, with wind speeds ranging between 15 and 30 knots. It is possible to kite year-round, wind tends to be stronger during winter, but make sure to know what you’re getting into and have an appropriate (walrus) wetsuit.
The North Sea coast tends to be windier and rougher, perfect for those who love riding waves, while the Baltic coast offers calmer waters and flatter conditions—ideal for beginners or freestylers. Bring a wetsuit, though! German waters can be a bit brisk.
St. Peter-Ording – the holy grail of German kitesurfing. With miles of sandy beach, consistent winds, and wide-open spaces, St. Peter-Ording is a kitesurfing mecca. It’s great for everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros, and it even hosts world cup events.
Fehmarn Island, known as the “Hawaii of the North,” Fehmarn offers steady winds, shallow water, and plenty of space for riders of all levels. Plus, the sunsets here are unreal. A few nice spots in the area.
Germany’s largest island, Rügen boasts several great kite spots, such as Suhrendorf, Dranske and Wiek. It’s perfect for those seeking flat water, steady winds, and fewer crowds.
Sahlenburg is another popular spot. Unique local charm, and you’ll often find fellow kitesurfers enjoying a post-session snack on the dunes.
If you’re new to kiting or looking for flat-water conditions, Pelzerhaken is a hidden gem. With waist-deep water and a chill vibe, it’s perfect for perfecting your skills and avoiding the crowds.
So, if you’re ready to ride the wind in a place that combines adrenaline with sausages, Germany’s kitesurfing scene has got you covered. And after your session, you can trade your kite for a pint at a local beer garden—prost!
